Does God speak to us?

Does God speak to us? “Speaking” may be done in many different fashions, don’t you think? Here is what the scriptures say about how God and His creation communicate.

Psalm 19:1-2, in most versions, says something like this: “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the skies above proclaims His handiwork.” Sounds like speaking to me.

“Day after day pours forth speech; night after night, they reveal knowledge.”

Psalm 19:3 says “There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard.”

If we believe Jesus has been made Wisdom and is the Wisdom in the book of Proverbs….then we have this: Wisdom shouts in the streets. She cries out in the public square. From Proverbs 1:20.

Elijah in the cave heard the still small voice of God. The earthquake, the big wind came, but he didn’t find God there. He found Him in the still small voice. That is often  how He speaks to us. The Scriptures exhort us to know His voice.

The inexperienced look for Him in different ways. Some look for “signs.” Before I got saved and filled with the Holy Spirit, I attended a support group for families of alcoholics. I started seeking God. One way I learned to recognize Him speaking to me was if something happened to me more than once. I might miss it the first time, but if it happened again, I learned to pay attention. God was trying to say something to me or show me something. After I got saved and baptized in the Spirit, I learned other ways God would speak to me.

Scriptures seem to confirm that God is always speaking. If that is the case, we must learn to hear better. God always “speaks” to me when I read His word. He always illuminates something to me. I love it when the “light comes on!”

Hebrews 3:7 “Today, as the Holy Spirit says, if you will HEAR HIS VOICE…Hebrews 12:25 “See that you do not refuse HIM WHO SPEAKS. For if they did not escape who refused Him who spoke on earth, how much more shall we not escape if we turn away from Him WHO SPEAKS from heaven…

God is speaking to us. Let us always be hearing what He has to say.

Lord, You know how to get our attention, how to reach each and every one of us. We ask You to pour out upon us what You want to say to us. Speak to us in dreams and visions, speak to us in the daytime through Your word. Speak to us through other people and through events and happenings. We set our hearts to listen for You. We need You and we love You.

Thank YOU for reading, Melting Mom. I read your recent post too and didn’t get a chance to leave a comment. I thought it was wonderful, your thoughts on having more children. What a sacrificial and giving heart you have!
