Call to Me, And I Will Show You Great and Mighty Things

Jeremiah 33:1-3 Moreover the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah a second time, while he was still shut up in the court of the prison, saying, “Thus says the LORD who made it, the LORD who formed it to establish it (the LORD is His name): Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know.”

God has great things for our lives, things He wants to show us for the future. Are we listening? Are we interested in listening? There are things we cannot even imagine that He wants to do in the world, things He wants to do with us! He is the smartest Person in the universe. We need to see as He sees because He sees the whole picture and holds the plan for the future.

If you were in an army of 1000 men, would you do what you thought you should do in a war situation? Or do you think it would be better to rely on the commander who has ALL the information from everywhere and can see the whole picture and with that information, can formulate the battle plan? I know I would be relying on the commander in that situation!

Well that’s how God is. He is the Commander in chief who sees everything. It is best to pay attention to His plans, because I can’t see everything and know everything.

Noah was warned of things that had not happened yet and prepared an ark for a storm the people on earth had never ever seen before. He saw the flood was going to come. Aren’t we glad he did, because the flood wiped out everyone on the earth except for his family. But all those people had a chance to get on the ark. They just didn’t believe Noah. God is not unjust. He gave them plenty of time to believe. The flood was in the plan. Genesis 7.

Abraham’s name proclaimed he was the “father of many nations,” although he had no children. That probably sounded crazy to a lot of people as he and his wife were in their later years of life. But it happened. They were old when Sarah had Isaac, the son of a promise.

Isaiah saw a virgin birth coming. Isaiah 7:14. I’m pretty sure that sounded crazy to his contemporaries of the day, but Isaiah was brave and proclaimed what God was showing him. The virgin birth was in God’s plan because Jesus could not be born the conventional way because of sin. Our Creator God is the Commander, showing us great and mighty things.

Jeremiah was the prophet who was shut up in prison while his country was being ravaged by the Babylonians. God instructed him to buy a piece of land from a relative. Who buys land in a war zone? But it was a sign to the nation that the Jews would return in 70 years, which they did. Jeremiah saw the nation returning, but it was difficult to believe at the time. The return happened after  King Cyrus took the throne. We read about the return in Ezra, Nehemiah, Haggai and other prophets of the Old Testament.

Men throughout history have “seen” things that did not exist yet, but they had an idea, saw it in their imagination, and proceeded to produce it. It’s how creation happens. Electricity, the telephone, the light bulb…all of the things we enjoy in modern times are the result of men who had an idea and were motivated to pursue it and bring it to pass. God imparts ideas to men and women. He shows them a piece of the plan and the part they play in making that plan come to fruition.

In spiritual life, it works the same way. If we pay attention, we can come to “see” some of the plan and the part we play in it. Our gifts and talents are indications of the part we play in the Commander’s plan. So let’s pay attention! There is much work to do for our King. We need to get in the plan!
