When Jesus walked the earth in human flesh and blood form, he taught the people how the kingdom, or the government of Heaven operated. He showed the people what the government was like and the principles it operated on. It was not like any “kingdoms” or governments here on earth. It was not at all like the way corrupted, sinful men operate. He said weird things like, do good and bless your enemy, pray for him, and other things foreign to our way of thinking. Everything he taught about the government of Heaven is unlike anything man does here on the earth. It is difficult for some people to accept. We don’t want to bless those who persecute us. We don’t want to pray for our enemies. We don’t feel like it. But this is how the government of Heaven operates. It behooves us as believers to do these things. When we do them, we reveal Heaven, which is the coming government, to those around us.
Matthew 5:5 says “The meek shall inherit the earth,” not those in power who always strive for power, not those who appear to be at the top right now, not those who connive and steal and kill to gain power, wealth and status. It’s the meek who inherit the earth. Isaiah 66:2 promises “says ‘But on this one will I look, on him who is poor and of a contrite spirit and who trembles at my word.’
Jesus said we are blessed when we are reviled and persecuted…and our reward is great in heaven. Persecution doesn’t feel good, and we don’t like it. But would Jesus lie to us? I don’t think so.
Matthew 5:11-12 Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My seek….for great is your reward in heaven…
We all know murder is wrong, Ten Commandments, but Jesus went further saying, whoever is angry with his brother without cause shall be in danger of the judgment. Adultery was forbidden by the 10 commandments, Jesus went further saying, If you look on a woman with lust in your heart, you have already committed adultery.
Divorce (man’s way) was permitted because of men’s (and today, women’s) hardness of heart, but Jesus said in the beginning it was not so. He stressed the importance of relationships.
The Old Testament said an eye for an eye, but Jesus said if someone slaps you on one cheek, give him the other one too.
He told men to not worry about what they would eat or what they would wear, that the Father in Heaven knew they needed those things and would provide them.
Jesus went around healing people who we might think were undeserving. He forgave people their sins which upset the religious people. He hung around sinners and ate with them, made friends with them and was criticized for it by the religious folks. His love for them caused them to love Him. He healed people who were outside the covenant the Jews had with God, people considered dogs and heathen by the religious folks. He did and said things that did not fit the religious beliefs of the day. He is still doing that, challenging our own religious beliefs and traditions that are averse to HIs government.
The kingdom or government of Heaven is unlike anything man has experienced on earth. The government of the United States with its Constitution and Bill of Rights that says all rights come from the Creator and that all men are created equal is probably the closest thing ever to the heavenly kingdom. Other countries that have a king are somewhat comparable. There will be no elections in the government of God. He is The Ruler and He is Just and Kind. There is no corruption in Him. As believers, this government or kingdom lives inside of us and we are to express it into the world. We are the light, we have the light. We are not to hide our light, no matter what it may cost us. The government of God IS coming to earth in its time, and no one can stop it. So go light up your world and increase the kingdom. And spread the love!
Here’s a promise we can look forward to seeing fulfilled: Isaiah 9:7 “Of the increase of His government and peace, There will be no end, Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom, To order it and establish it with judgment and justice, From that time forward, even forever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.“
