It All Started With a Promise

In the book of Genesis, Chapters 1 and 2, we see that God made His whole creation wonderful and declared it to be good. Every single aspect of creation, the stars, the skies, the sun, the moon, the animals and birds, the seed bearing trees and vegetation, God declared it was all good. Those things still exist today. Every operation of creation remains the same, just like it was in the beginning. All of creation, the animals, the trees and growing things have seeds in them that continue to bear, renew and replenish the earth just as God designed it. He set all of that in motion by His words. Then He made the crown jewel of His creation…he made man from the dust of the ground and put His own spirit within the man. He formed the woman and declared everything to now be complete and He rested on the seventh day, not because He was tired, but because He was done.

We are not sure how long it took, but some time later, Adam and Eve blew up the perfection of Heaven by not obeying the one rule God had given them. They had everything in the Garden…endless provision, health, perfection, and an assignment to tend it. They had something to do. They had dominion over the earth. They were its rulers. But Eve fell for the lie of the serpent and Adam followed her in that disastrous decision.

When handing out the consequences to what they had done, God started with the serpent. Adam was the one God had given the instructions to directly; Eve got them secondhand. God then spoke to the serpent and made His first promise of the coming One who would crush the serpent’s power.

Genesis 3:14-15. “So the LORD God said to the serpent: ‘Because you have done this, You are cursed more than all cattle, And more than every beast of the field; On your belly you shall go, And you shall eat dust All the days of your life. And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, And you shall bruise His heel.’”

Here’s my paraphrase…God said, ”I’m gonna send Somebody, and He’s gonna take you down…” This first promise from God spelled the impending doom of this evil spirit at a future point in history. There was no chance it was not going to happen, because God does not lie. It was going to happen. It was only a matter of when. Our God is very smart and knows everything. He does not lose.

After the sin of Adam, the Bible says that the spirit named satan became the “god of this world.” He is also called “…the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience.” Eph. 2:2

Adam gave his allegiance to that spirit in the Garden of Eden. Satan now became the ruler in the spiritual realm of the earth, and to this day, he continues to rule over humans through deception and lies. Mankind could not escape the sin nature that Adam bestowed upon them; they are born with it. Men (and women) actually cannot help the fact that they are sinners. It has been foisted upon them through that first sin.

All mankind is disobedient and “…by nature children of wrath…,” Ephesians 2:3 says. Satan’s spiritual influence is real. Nowhere does it seem more evident than in our time today (2024). The irrationality of people who are not able to think logically has greatly increased because of their refusal to submit to the Truth. 2 Corinthians 4:4 speaks of this, stating “…whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them.” But there is a Way out of the dilemma and His name is Jesus. Man can be made righteous again. It has been provided to us.

Romans 5:19 says “…by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by one Man’s obedience many will be made righteous.

The New Testament states that Adam was not deceived when he disobeyed God. (1 Timothy 2:14) The Bible says Eve was the one who was deceived. What that means is that Adam openly chose to disobey God. He knew the truth. He had heard it directly from the mouth of God. There are people who know the truth, but choose to go another direction and there are people who are deceived into disobedience. Adam and Eve are examples of both types of disobedience. There are always consequences for sin. Being deceived into sin is one thing, but openly choosing it when you know the truth is another matter entirely.

In John 12:31, Jesus called satan “the ruler of this world.” He repeats that in John 14:30 and John 16:11. Even Jesus, before His death, acknowledged that satan was the ruler of this world. In the book of  Ephesians 6:12, Paul lists the different levels of evil spirits that are in the world, principalities, powers, rulers of the darkness of this age, and spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.

To sum up…what God has promised, He will fulfill. The promise made all the way back in the beginning in Genesis 3:15 that God was going to send Someone to bruise satan’s head came true. It took a few thousand years, but it happened. The promise, the prophecy, was fulfilled. Jesus, the second Adam, came to the earth as a man and became the sacrifice to pay the penalty for our sins. He destroyed the power of satan over mankind. That is a fact.

Those of us who accept that Truth are free from the power and deceptions of the god of this world, the prince of the power of the air. Our rights as free agents under God have been restored to us. Man was put in charge of the earth, not to destroy it, but to steward it for good. Jesus’s victory over the spiritual god of this age is our victory also. Praise the Lord! We have been restored. Our fellowship with God is restored. Our LIFE is restored. We can have the abundant life that Jesus promised now that we are free from the power of sin and satan. God does indeed keep His word.
